Abstract
This report discusses the Educational Proposal for Support of Sustainable Development (Proposta Educacional de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Sustentável – Peads), created by Serviço e Tecnologia Alternativa (Serta), in Pernambuco's rural area in 1989. The Proposal began as an initiative by a group working with family farmers endeavoring to connect academic life to life in the field, that is, in building a bridge between school and rural reality. Next, Peads expanded its action to municipal public education systems in Pernambuco, Bahia and Alagoas. The text describes four stages for implementing the Program: the teacher turns homework into research on the life of the place; the teacher uses the information in teaching content; the products of students are shown at school-promoted events; at the end of each subject, the teacher guides the assessment process, where each actor (teacher, student and family) self-assesses and assesses the others. The report concludes that Peads has achieved gratifying results. The teacher, as a conveyor of knowledge, begins to feel like an author and builder of knowledge and values. Families become partners in educating their children, understanding the school not just as a space for learning, but as a learning community.
